Myanmar tops most generous country list for second time

Yangon November 20

Myanmar tops this year’s CAF World Giving Index as the most generous country in the world; overtaking the United State which stood together with it at the previous year’s first place, giving an important global message what matters is generosity not just economic prosperity.

World Giving Index (WGI) is an annual report published by the Charities Aid Foundation-CAF, using data gathered by Gallup, and ranks over 130 countries in the world according to how charitable they are.

On its online post, CAF stated. “Despite their highly developed economies, only five G20 countries are in this year’s Top 20, reminding us that economic prosperity does not automatically lead to a rise in generosity.”

CAF index published in November 2015 placed Myanmar, the USA and New Zealand in the top three positions respectively with Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Sri Lanka, Ireland and Malaysia completing the top ten.

“Cultural and religious practices, as well as disruptive events, are at the root of a number of big changes seen this year”, CAF pointed out.

“This year there are encouraging signs that, despite continuing economic uncertainty, people are more willing to donate money. Young people especially are participating more in all three kinds of giving than any other age group”, it noted.

The aim of the World Giving Index is to provide insight into the scope and nature of giving around the world. The first edition was released in September 2010.
